The Beginning of the Manhattan Project

Just before the beginning of World War II on August 2, 1939. A group of scientists, Albert Einstein among them, warned President Roosevelt via letter that Hitler's Germany might be close to producing an atomic bomb. The group of scientists said that Germany was attempting to purify Uranium-235 which they thought was key in the manufacturing of these bombs.
Lieutenant General Leslie Groves
Roosevelt responded with utmost urgency and stated that he would do whatever it took because the United States had to be the first to develop the atomic bomb. He gave General Leslie Groves unprecedented authority over this project as well as unlimited funds. The project was thereafter known as the Manhattan Project or Project X and was top secret.
Many scientists believed that it was possible to create such a bomb from Uranium-235. This was because theoretically it was shown that it could be done, it was just the engineering, money, space and time that was the hard part.
